Eyes on Talents member, Julien Gorrias, founder of the Paris-based Carbone14.studio, advocates for more conscious and responsible design. He is behind the creation of poetic and committed pieces, such as La chaise qui cache la forêt, an everyday piece of furniture whose creation and degradation have no impact on the environment, even concealing flower seeds in its legs for a second life once returned to nature. Today we're taking a closer look at Torii, which entered the Mobilier national's collections in 2023 and was recognized with Le FRENCH DESIGN 100 Award. Torii is a coffee table inspired by a 19th-century woodblock print by the Japanese artist Kawase Hasui. It features three tabletops of varying sizes and heights, supported by six legs. These legs are covered with twelve layers of paint taken from the original artwork. Over time, through wear and tear, the legs will reveal the colors of the underlying layers. Carefully considered and highlighted from the design stage, the patina will make the table unique and give it a distinctive character as time goes by.
