Thero Makepe has been selected as the winner of the MEP – Collection Gervanne + Matthias Leridon – Cité internationale des arts Residency program, destined for emerging artists and dedicated to African photography. The purpose of this residency is to support young African artists and to highlight practices that explore new forms of photography. This residency will be an opportunity for the artist to work on a new set of works, provisionally titled "The Powers That Be". In this series Thero Makepe will focus on the forces likely to psychologically control individuals, a fatalistic idea conveyed by the religious, educational and corporate institutions he frequented.

Better Future Awards

The Better Future Awards winners have been announced. Among the winners, Sophie Dries, was rewarded for the design of the Michel Vivien Flagship Store in Paris, which pays tribute to the craftsmanship behind their collections. The interior pulses with a 15-meter-long wooden wave, a sumptuous walnut wall that offsets its clean lines and expansive volume while acting as a gateway into this singular universe. Sculptural wood tables fill the interior serving both for the display of shoes or occasional seating, while totems by Michael Voseller Gallery decorate the space.

Jeanne et Moreau

Prix Polyptyque

Julia Gat, Andrea Graziosi and the duo Jeanne and Moreau are the winners of the Prix Polyptyque 2022, each expressing a relationship to the identities and cultures of the South of France, crossed by mysticism, queerness and intimate stories. The works of the three winners are now exhibited at the Galerie Sit Down in Paris, partner of this fifth edition. Each of these photographers expresses in their own way an intimate and political relationship with the south, sometimes through the story of diasporas and wanderings, sometimes through mysticism and family stories.

Dominique White

Foundwork Artist Prize

Dominique White is the winner of the 2022 Foundwork Artist Prize, which comes with a financial endowment and a studio visit with each of the five jury members. The Marseille and Essex-based artist weaves together theories of Black Subjectivity, Afro-pessimism, and Hydrarchy with the nautical myths of the Black Diaspora into a term she defines as the Shipwreck(ed); a reflexive verb and state of being. Eva Langret, a jury member and director of Frieze London, said in a statement, "We were particularly taken with the formal sensibility of Dominique White’s work, and her engagement with complex ideas around myth, maritime history, and colonial past."
