This project is a resort collection that explores a camp vacation aesthetic inspired by the mass tourist in southern Europe. Mallorca and Gran Canaria have been replaced by my own name, and I’ve created a fictional country: Rebeccaland. Through textile manipulation—such as sequin printing, work with
patterns and layering, and braiding and beading hair—typical holiday elements are brought into a fashion context. Football merch and I Love items have also become part of my narcissistic narrative, where I try to see how far I can push people to fetishize me as much as they do real countries. The garments have a sense of offness—they’re “overdecorated,” exposing the vulnerability of a person who is trying. And trying is something we often do on vacation, when we put on our finest summer dress to eat at a mediocre restaurant, before heading to a karaoke bar lit with neon lights. “Beach please” invites reflection on how, in a global society, we seek to define our identity and belonging through travel and consumption.
