How can I use the «disgusting female» body as a
medium of resistance?
We recognize the pressure women face to meet
society's beauty and sexuality standards.
We are plagued by unrealistic beauty standards and
expectations, catalyzed through social media and
economics. Woman are lead to believe in
obj
ectification and sexualization of the body and
nudity.
Throughout my design practice, I explore the concept
of the «monster» which is linked to a re-appropriation
of the human form and a defiance to social pressures.
The monster breaks binary and social order whilst
embodying difference. My designer voice is driven
by the statement «I would rather be a monster
than a woman, it seems easier» (Ferris, 2017). The
monstrous is produced at the border between what
Kristeva.J refers as to the 'clean and proper body' and
the 'abject body or the body which has lost its form
and integrity~ (Kristeva, 1982). This creative body of work is the culmination of my Master's journey that sought to explore
feminist ideologies. I have sought to deliberately
challenge and undermine in a bid to transgress
and provoke, responding to "monster" within.
Garment archetypes including the corset have
been important to my research journey, and
outcomes have often been sculptural in form
- using boning to simultaneously corrupt and
honour traditional craft values.
