Graduate Collection Titled: Misilmeri

Sicilian identity is at the heart of designer Joseph Inga’s inspiration. His accomplished menswear collection reflects the island’s rich, multi-layered cultural heritage and references the romantic orientalism of Mariano Fortuny’s early 19th Century paintings.

mere, fine wools and vintage kimono silk - but the majority are sourced from family, generous donations and deadstock.

Joseph creates softly aged, hand-dyed and distressed effects evoke a nonchalant heritage vibe. Striking features include deconstructed, detached and re-purposed metallic embellishments from dress uniform. Subtle manipulation, sophisticated layering and rich but delicate tonal contrasts abound in this tour-de-force of drama and detail.

Garments wrap, contour and comfort the body, evoking Fortuny’s depiction of the itinerant lifestyle of the Maghreb. Saturated dark tones are enlightened with subtle dyeing techniques conjuring up wine-dark seas, pink -blush sunsets and stars within a deep purple dusk. Referencing the late writer Leonardo Sciascia’s metaphor of Sicily as, “large dark areas separated by areas of brightness”, this is a truly memorable collection.
